Solar incentives available to San Jose residents

Net energy metering

Net metering offers credits to homeowners with rooftop solar systems that generate more energy than they use. When your solar system has supplied your home with the power it needs, it sends the extra energy to the grid and you earn credits on your energy bill.

City of San Jose Clean Energy Program

By enrolling in the San Jose Clean Energy (SJCE) program, you’ll sign up for 100% clean energy, even if you have to pull power from the power grid. This might happen at night when your solar panels aren’t producing power.

Although the program doesn’t take effect until 2020, you can enroll early and start taking advantage of net metering right away.

PG&E Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)

This California state incentive offers homeowners a rebate when purchasing a home battery system. San Jose homeowners will have the ability to use their battery to optimize their energy usage with solar while saving on the initial investment.

Home battery storage is most relevant with time-of-use rates, which are becoming the norm across California. With this pricing system from utilities, homeowners are charged more or less for their energy depending on when they use it, not just how much they use.

Optimize solar with a home battery

If you have solar plus battery storage, you can save up energy in your home energy bank with the power your panels generate. Then, at night or on cloudy days, you can pull from your personal bank rather than from the energy grid (which will cost more at peak times).

Run on solar power—day or night. With the LG Chem battery, store solar energy and use it to protect your home from high utility rates, power outages, and fluctuating time-of-use rates.

If your battery is charged with 100% solar power, you may be eligible for a tax credit: a dollar-for-dollar reduction of your tax liability, equivalent to 30% of your solar and energy storage cost.

Federal ITC Tax Credit

Thanks to the Federal Incentive Tax Credit (ITC), qualifying homeowners—who have purchased their solar energy system—may be eligible for a tax incentive from the federal government when you file your income taxes.
